Cobalt & the Hired Guns is about love and guts, energy and enthusiasm – refusing to pretend they aren’t having fun.
The repertoire for this five-piece from Chicago has been described as Americana, Folk Punk, Pop, or just Good Ol’ Fashioned Rock n’ Roll. They’ve been compared to The Hold Steady, The Clash, Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band, The Fratellis, Frightened Rabbit, Backyard Tire Fire, and “Wilco on Xanax covering The Clash”
Cobalt & the Hired Guns plays at venues and clubs all over Chicago, including The Metro, Schuba’s, Cubby Bear, Double Door and Subterranean with bands such as State Radio, I Fight Dragons, Josh Ritter, Baby Teeth, Dashboard Confessional and Big D and the Kids’ Table to name just a few.
In 2008 they released their first album, Jump the Fence, which saw the band getting serious about art and environmentalism – the album was a carbon neutral project.
The Double Single, recorded at CRC in 2009, is a two-song testimony of the band’s evolutionary jump from being a group of friends who like making music, to a team of talented musicians who have figured out exactly what their sound is about.
Their new full-length album is scheduled to drop in mid-late 2011 and promises to be their most energetic and musically dynamic project to date. With the addition of accordion, a full horn section (think soul-inspired backup horns), and other audible goodies, this will be the album to establish the band as a full-on rock force in Chicago … and maybe the world.
